Iwato Festival
Date: Apr 19,2026(Sun)
One of Aichi's most illustrious float festivals
The Iwato Festival is an annual religious event of Iwato Jinja Shrine, located in the Umayose area of Imaise Town, north of Ichinomiya City.
On the first Sunday after April 19th, three beautifully decorated floats; the Daisho Float, Nakayashiki Float, and Yamanoshoji Float; take center stage with mechanized puppet performances taking place atop as well as the spectacle of young men running alongside galloping horses as a testament to their courage.
The three remaining floats are of the Inuyama three-story construction, with separated puppets. While Aichi is known for its wealth of float festivals, this one is extremely rare due to the fusion of its parade floats with the duties performed by the master of ceremonies.
History
In 1600 when Lord Ishida Mitsunari began raising an army, the Tokugawa forces turned around from their original course to the eastern Kanto region back to central Japan. The forces stayed for a time at Iwato Jinja Shrine on their way to Sekigahara—the grounds of what would become one of Japan's most notorious battles.
The stay by Tokugawa's army led to the demise of the shrine, but after victory at the Battle of Sekigahara, the Tokugawa Clan restored the shrine to its former glory. The beginnings of the Iwato Festival lie in a ritualistic celebration of the shrine's resurrection requested to Magistrate Ina Bizen-mori Tadatsugu, where the shrine crest took the shape of the Mitsuba Aoi, or three-leaved hollyhock design of the prestigious Tokugawa Clan.
