See a rudimentary salt production facility and taste the natural salt

The town of Mihama has been a sea salt production area since the ancient Japanese Kofun period (third–seventh century AD). The Food and Health Center here has brought back ancient salt production methods to the present day.
The establishment is located across the road from Onoura Beach and acts as a tourist spot for Mihama Town, based on the theme of salt. Learn about salt production and enjoy hands-on events like tole painting and tombo-dama beads.

Enter the parking lot, and the first thing you'll notice is the wooden, four-tiered structure with a thatched roof. It is used for salt production and the only of its kind in Aichi Prefecture. Sea water is poured over top multiple times, evaporating much of the water and resulting in a brine with 20% salt. This brine is then boiled for four hours to leave the sea salt. It also creates bittern—a key component in tofu production.
Items using Mihama salt are available inside for souvenirs as well as a cafe where you can take a rest over a tasty meal. And don't miss the Mihama salt soft serve ice cream.
