Toyokuni Shrine
(Toyokuni Jinja)
In 1885, Toyokuni Shrine was established in Owari Nakamura (present day Nakamura Ward, Nagoya-City), the birthplace of warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Dedicated to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, an auxiliary shrine also exists for his military commander Kato Kiyomasa. As a shrine for success, good fortune, the tea ceremony, and construction, large numbers of people visit from all over Japan in addition to local worshippers.
Nakamura’s Giant Torii Gate
As soon as you exit Nakamura Koen Station, your attention will instantly be drawn to the giant torii gate. In 1921 a plan was made to commemorate the incorporation of Nakamura Ward into Nagoya-City and on New Year’s Day in 1930 festival floats and streetcars decorated with flowers went on parade in a grand ceremony to celebrate the completion of the gate. The torii gate has a total height of approximately 24.5 meters, and each pillar has a diameter of 2.5 meters. Regarded as the largest in Japan at the time of completion, the gate remains a symbol of the neighborhood to this day.
Goshuin Shrine Stamps
The shrine’s goshuin stamps also come in lots of seasonal floral or metallic versions. The various kinds include Miho Washi Japanese paper goshuin, silver or copper leaf goshuin, and limited-time New Year’s goshuin.
