Osu Shopping District
A hodgepodge of everything you could want
The Osu Shopping District is located at the south end of Nagoya's metropolitan hub Sakae. The area is home to a whopping 1,200 or so shops and other establishments.
From the staple Nagoya eats to other fare with lines forming out the restaurants' doors, you're sure to find a plethora of cuisine characteristic of Japan and other countries around the world in addition to relaxing cafes. If fashion is your thing, you've come to the right place; the latest trends come together with retro fits via second-hand clothing shops. Whatever you want, it's here!
You may have heard of Tokyo's Akihabara district, known for its nearly countless shops selling high-tech gizmos; anime, manga, video game, and other merchandise; and other cultural goods. Well, the Osu Shopping District is home to a variety of subculture stores in and around the Osu Ameyoko Building, making it the Akihabara of Aichi Prefecture.
Nagoya's go-to sweets such as uiro, a savory steamed cake of glutinous rice flour and sugar, can also be found along with can't-miss combo meals and cafes if you are looking for a bite to eat as you walk through the bustling streets. The district really is a hodgepodge of everything you can imagine regardless of shoppers' age, sex, or nationality, making it a major destination for travelers from abroad coming to Nagoya.
While this is heaven for people watching, you're sure to find other entertainment like the Osu Street Performance Festival with street performers and a parade of lavishly gorgeous geisha; the Osu Summer Festival, which marks the culmination of summer in the area; the World Cosplay Summit visited by cosplayers from around the world; events like the Setsubun Festival and Uma no To portable children's shrine procession at Osu Kannon Temple right at Osu Shopping District's main entrance; and more no matter the time of year.
