Cultural Path Hyakka Hyakuso
A Taisho-period building bursting with seasonal foliage
The study, tearoom, and warehouse of Hyakka Hyakuso estate, built in 1920 during Japan's Taisho period, were renovated together with the new addition of the Multipurpose Hall in April of 2007.
The outside garden was designed to portray the seasonal foliage illustrated in the Hyakka Hyakuso Folding Screen, an important cultural property now in posession of Tokugawa Art Museum. Enjoy a sip of tea and piano performances as you gaze upon the garden from the Hall.
A walk through periods in Japanese history
This estate was originally the residence of the Okatani family and founder of the independent trading company dealing in steel, machinery, and other such products. Vacant for a long period of time, the city of Nagoya successfully consulted the Okatani family to give new purpose to the estate as a rest stop along Nagoya's Cultural Path. While other buildings along the Cultural Path belong to the city, Hyakka Hyakuso still remains the property of the Okatani family.
A relaxing moment with a cup of tea and spectacular floral view
The Hall, originally the property's main residence, offers self-service tea and coffee. Look through the windows, and you are greeted by the multitude of different foliage in the adjacent garden, designed following the property's famous Hyakka Hyakuso Folding Screen, which illustrates some 90 varieties of plant life. Seventy varieties from the folding screen are available to gaze upon as you get off your feet for a bit during a journey through the culture of Nagoya.

• Board the Sakura-dori Subway Line bound for Nonami and Tokushige. Get off at Takaoka Station and walk 12 min. (1 km) north along Route 41 from Exit 1.
Bus from Nagoya Station Bus Terminal (behind JP Tower):
• Nagoya City Kikan Main Trunk Line: From Platform 10, take the Kikan #2 bound for Jiyugaoka and Itaka Shako via Chayagasaka. Get off at Shirakabe Bus Stop and walk 3 min. (280 m) southeast.
