Osu Kannon Temple Setsubun Festival
Date: Feb 3,2026(Tue)
Driving away evil in one of Nagoya's great Buddhist temples
Osu Kannon Temple is one of Japan's Great Kannon Temples and holds its own Setsubun Festival in spring.
During the festivities, for JPY 3,500, anyone can get up on the special stage and throw soy beans off. Throwing beans is one of the keynotes of the festival, said to drive away evil, and is the first thing that comes to mind when the Japanese hear the festival's name, making it an integral event to participate in if possible.
The bean throwing ritual begins after a treasure ship named the Osu Maru is paraded around carrying the seven gods of fortune from Hisaya-Odori Park (Kibo no Hiroba Square) to Osu Kannon Temple in the afternoon.
